Here’s an idea. How about treating an investment in healthcare organizations like the traditional savings account offered by banks? Low return but a safe, solid investment. Perhaps even a government guarantee for investors with rules governing those organizations that participate. I’m unclear on the details right now but on the surface I find this compelling.
Our society needs to quit making billions of dollars of profit on healthcare as if it were a regular consumable. We need to stop thinking that driving greater efficiency and cost savings alone are what will drive better outcomes for patients. We need to transform how healthcare is funded and the concept of what financial returns should be, and find the people who want to provide direct care and who want to lead these organizations who find their work to be a calling that affords them a comfortable lifestyle rather than an opportunity to live more lavishly or consistently beat the market.
